Amelia Parnell and Kendra Singh, NUNMC-IPE/IPCP interns, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony, after driving the hundred plus miles from San Diego to Los Angeles.

Amelia later wrote that “the ribbon cutting ceremony was awesome. The Who’s Who of the community were there. I also took a tour of the clinic which was awesome as well. Wow so excited and humble to be part of the next chapter of this project.

“I wanted to ask you if there were any onsite volunteer opportunities at the clinic. As you know I’ve an EMT license, but more importantly I’ve over a year experience working as a health coach at the La Jolla Veterans Administration. As a health coach I work with the physicians and nurses to come up with an appropriate plan to help the vets change their health behaviors,  whether in regard to their eating, exercise, or smoking cessation. Following the initial plan I follow through with the patient on a weekly basis with house calls.  The resultant changes are discussed with the physician on a monthly basis. I also have a certificate on motivational speaking which helps me be successful in motivating our VA patients.

I know I can make a difference within the people in the community of Watts. Continue smiling.”

Kendra has developed and presented a smoking cessation health education program to residents and clinic patients at one of the community based organizations working with NUNMC-IPE/IPCP. She is now creating a program of various health education modules to prevent other lifestyle behaviors that increase the risk for complex chronic diseases.

Other interns have presented on electronic health records and health information, with the leadership and guidance of Professor Linda Travis Macomber, RN BSN MBA, the Program Lead for the Master of Science in Health Informatics at the School of Health and Human Services,  National University Technology and Health Science Center in San Diego, CA.
